Phase 3: Review of Peer's Sequence
Today was the day. It was a fresh start and I was going to make the most of it. I was so happy that my friend was going to open their house and give me a place to stay for a while. I walked up and saw the bright blue door and was ready to ring the door bell when the cat in the window caught my eye. He did not look as friendly as I liked, but it wasn't going to ruin my day. My friend brought me in and shared their meal and lent me a room. It had a deep tub and a great tv set up, but the best part was the big bed. I knew that I made the right choice. And I was thankful to my friend for letting me stay.
I think the sequence was well done. I do think that I like having a subject, but overall I was able to pick up some kind of story line. I think the photos were vague and let the viewer fill in the blanks, but I do think that it puts the viewer as the one experiencing the story. That is one reason I would like a subject, so that I do not have to use the word I. Overall great job. I can really see using this activity in a classroom.
Phase 2: My Own Sequence
Reflection: In math I think this would be a great way for students to define new terms or even find real world examples of mathematics. For example if we were studying equations, they could find an example of a linear line, a quadratic, an exponential, and absolute value. To make it more challenging, have the pictures be connected in a story. This would bring literature and writing, which all students need practice with. I see a lot of educational value, because you are having students think in a different way. It makes them have to examine the world in a different view and come to their own story or conclusion. It is easy to write something the teacher has written, but to go and explore to find answers, makes it more challenging, but gives you your own understanding.
Phase 1:
Things are but the seem.
For Allison Marks, life had changed drastically these last few months. The country broke out in war and her father enlisted to go fight for his country. Her mother, having lost her husband’s income, had to get a job at a local dinner. Her mother tried to get day shifts, but today they needed her to work the night shift, and seeing as they needed the money, no was not an option. So Allison’s mother went to work, and asked the neighbor to keep an eye on her. Allison knew that her mother was doing the best she could and providing her with a place to live and food on the table. However, Allison missed her old life, where her mother and father would read her bedtime stories, cook together, play together, and just be together. Allison especially missed that today as she sat alone by the window. She brought her chair to the window so she could look out for her mother, and it also happened to be by her father’s old hat and coat. She always felt safe and loved when she was around her father, and hoped that his possessions might make it easier. She had every intent to read that night and wait for her mother to come home, but she kept looking at her father’s hat and coat. She played with the buttons and opened the jacket just to look. Sometimes with the jacket and hat on the coat rack it looked like her father, but only if she looked quickly. No matter what she felt like her father was with her, and eventually rocked herself to sleep. As Allison slept she dreamed, she dreamed about life the way it was, and then she dreamed about the hat and coat. She dreamed that the hat and coat was her father, and that he came home and helped put her to bed. Allison slept well that night with the happy images floating through her head, but eventually day will break and reality will hit, but for the time being let the child dream.
