Assignment 3:
Reflection:
The title of the cartoon is “My First Math Test”, it would be aimed for 8th to 9th graders who are learning about what an algebraic expression versus equation is. The cartoon is trying to convey vocabulary and the difference between expressions and equations. The instructional designed I used is trying to convey a story and place the vocabulary into a situation. By doing that it allows students to see the words in a different context. I think it would be a great project for a student to do for vocabulary or a new concept. For them to tell a story and find another way to convey the message. I think it is important because it combines images and words, and it is a great way to combine writing with math. I employed the Mayer’s principle of just putting words with images to try and make the words stick. I also used line and focal point. The line with the background and text boxes and the focal point with the focus being on the main characters.
I never thought of comics as a teaching tools, but I can see how applying words to pictures or even having students create pictures to go with words can reinforce and idea. I always thought comic were a great way to convey and idea in a different way than just text. I can see how students who might not be strong with words can find this beneficial. I can think of a lot of units that could start with students making a comic strip of what they know about the unit or defining the vocabulary for the unit.
